Rome
Pantha Rei
This is an AIC accredited restaurant. They put flags in your meal to identify that it is gluten free. We ordered a gluten free pizza and pasta, and both were fantastic.
Mama Eat
This is an AIC accredited restaurant. Someone close to our table heard me telling my husband the meals I was between, and she told me I had to get the Pistachio pizza, so that helped me my decision. Well… she was right. It was fantastic! All meals can be made gluten free at this establishment.
La Soffitta Renovatio
This was close to Vatican City and is an AIC accredited restaurant. After our tour of the Vatican Museum and St. Peter’s Basilica was finished, we walked to this restaurant. I had a fantastic calzone. My gluten free food came out with a little flag that identified the meal as gluten free.
Wanted
There are very few AIC accredited restaurants around the Coliseum. After our tour we had an AIC accredited restaurant picked out, however, when we arrived, they were sadly closed. At this point, I was entering the hangry zone. I went on the Find Me Gluten Free app and saw Wanted had positive gluten free reviews. When we showed up, I conveyed in Italian that I have celiac disease, and they advised me right away that they could accommodate me. They assured they used separate clean water to cook the gluten free pasta. Please note this is not an AIC accredited restaurant. While AIC restaurants are the safest way to eat in Italy, we were in a bind, and went to the Find Me Gluten Free App. You should always ask questions to make sure you feel safe eating at a restaurant. I was so hungry that I forgot to take a picture of the food, so you can see my empty plate!
Tonarello
This is not an AIC accredited restaurant, however, I saw numerous people recommend it and saw they had gluten free options and saw good gluten free reviews. It did not disappoint! Italy is amazing about having AIC accredited restaurants. However, in the United States, there is no accreditation for restaurants and there are very few dedicated gluten free eateries. Therefore, I typically do my research before going to a restaurant and did that in this situation. Additionally, they assured me they took cross contamination very seriously. I had the gluten free cacio e pepe and it was great.
New Food Gluten Free
On our last morning in the city, I woke up early and walked to New Food Gluten Free. It is very close to the Tiber River, so I ordered a few pastries and walked to the other side to Trastavere and sat on some steps with a coffee and my pastry. To say it was incredible is an understatement. I highly recommend stopping by!
Non-Food Related Rome Recommendation
We just happened to stop by the Alter of the Fatherland also Altara della Patria or The Victor Emmanual II National Monument. First of all, the monument itself is astounding, and I recommend going to see it. Additionally, we just happened to find a cafe on the back side of the monument that overlooks the Coliseum. You do not need to buy tickets, but if you walk up and around to exit, on the back side of the monument is a café. We had no idea about this, but we stopped for a drink and had a fantastic view of the Coliseum. I would highly recommend adding this to your itinerary if possible.
